Singapore's total fertility rate remains at historic low of 0.97 in 2024

03:52 Min

Singapore's total fertility rate remained at its historic low of 0.97 in 2024, despite it being the Year of the Dragon. Giving this update at the Prime Minister's Office Committee of Supply debate, Ms Indranee Rajah said birth rates remain a national priority. This, as low fertility and an ageing population bring significant impacts to Singapore's economy and society. She added that the government's approach is to provide support, rather than setting birth targets. Meanwhile, babies born this year will receive a special hamper, also known as the SG60 Baby Gift, as Singapore marks 60 years of independence. Sherlyn Seah reports.
