Philippine oil tanker sinks: Coast guard racing to prevent massive environmental catastrophe

03:30 Min

The Philippine Coast Guard is racing to prevent a massive environmental catastrophe, a day after an oil tanker sank off the northern province of Bataan. The MT Terra Nova sank in rough waters in the early hours of Jul 25 while it was headed for Iloilo City. At least one crew member died. The sinking has resulted in an oil slick stretching several kilometres. But officials say the spill appears to be minimal and is largely from diesel fuel used to power the tanker and not from its cargo of industrial fuel. Buena Bernal reports.
