India's ruling BJP tables 'One Nation, One Election' Bill to hold simultaneous national, state polls

03:17 Min

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP party has introduced a new Bill, which it hopes will revamp the way elections are held. The "One Nation, One Election" Bill is calling for state and national polls to be held at the same time — a move that the government says will save billions of dollars. India currently holds multiple elections each year at various levels. But, opposition parties have argued that simultaneous elections go against the spirit of the Constitution. The Bill is now being sent to a joint parliamentary committee for further consultation and debate. Ishan Garg reports.
