Indian opposition makes surprise gains, maintains grip on southern states
India's opposition Congress Party is holding a special press briefing, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge and leader Rahul Gandhi speaking. Mr Gandhi said the people of India have "unanimously rejected" Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress is leading in more than 90 seats -- a marked improvement from 52 during the 2019 election. The opposition INDIA alliance has already surpassed exit poll expectations by crossing the 200-mark. Mr Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance is at about 300, and early counts have signalled that their 400-seat target may not happen.
