China says Taiwan's leader is "stubborn" on independence with ill intent

05:00 Min

China has accused Taiwan's President William Lai of escalating tensions for political reasons, after Mr Lai's special address to mark Double Ten Day, which commemorates the founding of the Republic of China. The Chinese foreign ministry added that both sides of the strait belong to one China and reunification is an inevitable necessity. Beijing has repeatedly called Mr Lai a "dangerous separatist". Mr Lai has remained defiant and vowed to "resist annexation" in his latest speech. CNA's Victoria Jen has more from Taipei.
