SINGAPORE: Olympic medallist Max Maeder won the 2024 Formula Kite Asian Championships in Daishan, China, on Sunday (Sep 22), his second title in as many competitions since the Paris Games.

Earlier in the week, Maeder won eight of the 12 races in the opening series, which was cut short due to a typhoon hitting the region prior to the competition.

Winds were too strong for racing on Sunday said the International Kiteboarding Association on Instagram.

This meant that the medal series would not be contested and the Singaporean took the title. Maeder finished second in the last edition of the competition in 2023.

China's Haoran Zhang and Jiangang Wu took second and third respectively.

Earlier this month, the 17-year-old won the Austrian leg of the IKA KiteFoil World Series.

Last month, Maeder won OIympic bronze at the Marseille Marina, ending Singapore's eight-year wait for an Olympic podium finish since swimmer Joseph Schooling won gold in 2016.

Maeder also became Singapore's youngest Olympic medallist. Austria's Valentin Bontus won gold, while Slovenia's Toni Vodisek took silver.
