SINGAPORE: The Primary 1 registration exercise for admission to schools in 2025 will start on Jul 2, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Thursday (May 16).
Singaporean children born between Jan 2, 2018, and Jan 1, 2019, must participate in the upcoming registration exercise or enrol in the Junior 1 or Primary 1 programme of a special education school.
Information on the number of vacancies in each primary school will be available on MOE's website by Jun 25.Â
From Jul 2, parents can log in to the Primary 1 registration portal on MOE’s website to view the registration phases and schools that their child is eligible to register in.
Parents will need a valid Singpass with two-factor authentication (2FA) to log in to the registration portal. They are advised to set this up early and ensure the validity of their Singpass account before the start of the registration exercise.
Only one parent is required to log in to submit the registration through the portal.
“Parents who require assistance during registration may contact the school of their choice via email or telephone on the respective registration days between 9am to 4.30pm,” said the Education Ministry. Â
Key dates of registration phases
The Primary 1 registration exercise will be conducted in different phases.
Phases 1 to 2C supplementary are for children who are Singaporeans or permanent residents. International students will be able to register in Phase 3.Â
For parents registering their children under Phase 1 – those who have siblings currently studying at the school – registration will be from Jul 2 to Jul 4. Results will be released on Jul 10.
Phase 2A registration begins on Jul 11 and ends on Jul 12. This phase is for children with a parent or sibling who is a former student of the primary school, or whose parent is a member of the school advisory or management committee.Â
Children whose parents are working at the primary school, or are from the MOE kindergarten under the purview and located within the primary school, can also apply in this phase.
Results for Phase 2AÂ will be released on Jul 19.
Phase 2B is for children whose parents are school volunteers or active community leaders, or are members of the church or clan directly connected with the school. Registration for this phase will run from Jul 22 to Jul 23.
Results for Phase 2B will be made known on Jul 29. MOE will reserve 20 spaces in each primary school for this phase.
Phase 2C registration – for children not registered in a primary school in the earlier phases – will take place from Jul 30 to Aug 1, with results available on Aug 13. Forty places in each primary school are reserved under this phase.
For children who are not yet registered, they can register in Phase 2C supplementary, which will take place from Aug 15 to Aug 16. Results for this phase will be released on Aug 27.
Phase 3 involves a two-step process. Parents of international students should submit an "indication of interest" form online between May 28 and Jun 3.Â
Applicants will be notified via email by October on whether they can be offered a place. If a place is offered, the parent of the child will be informed of how to register with the designated school.
School admission at Phase 3 is not guaranteed, as there may be limited vacancies after allocation of places to Singaporean or PR children.
During each phase, the number of vacancies and applicants will be updated.
"As parents can withdraw and make changes throughout the registration period, parents should take note that these numbers can change.
"Schools will not be able to provide any additional information beyond what is available on the MOE Primary 1 registration website," said MOE.
DATA FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
Data from last year's Primary 1 registration exercise is also available online. This includes the number of vacancies, applicants, and balloting information for each phase in every school.Â
Parents can also view a list of schools within 2km of their residence and check if these schools were oversubscribed in specific phases during last year's registration exercise.
“In selecting a primary school, we encourage parents to consider a wide stable of schools and explore how these schools’ unique programmes and offerings can best meet their child’s learning needs, interests, and strengths,” said MOE.Â
It added that schools reasonably close to home should be considered to reduce a child’s commuting time. Schools that are located further from a child’s home could also mean fewer transport options for them.
WARNING AGAINST FALSE INFORMATION
Parents should use the official residential address on their NRICs when registering their child for Primary 1.Â
“A child who gains priority admission into a school through the home-school distance category is required to reside at the address used for registration for at least 30 months from the commencement of the Primary 1 registration exercise on Jul 2,” said MOE.Â
"In cases where this condition is not met, MOE will transfer the child to another school with vacancies."
Parents who wish to register their child using the address of the child’s grandparent or a caregiver should declare the alternative childcare arrangement by completing the Declaration of Alternative Child-Care Arrangement form online between Jul 1 and Aug 1.
“Parents should submit their declaration early as they must receive the approval email from MOE before they can register their child for Primary 1 using the caregiver’s address,” said the ministry.Â
Any registrant found to have provided false information during the registration exercise will be referred to the police for investigation, it added.Â
"If a child is found to have been successfully registered in a school based on false information, MOE has and will transfer the child to another school with remaining vacancies after all eligible children have registered," said the ministry.
