SINGAPORE: A moving company supervisor who was engaged to transport unwanted furniture to a recycling facility ended up dumping it in a secluded area out of convenience.

For illegal disposal of waste, Siow Wei Wen was fined S$8,000 (US$5,970) by the court, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) in a news release on Thursday (Jan 25).

He was supposed to transport the furniture from a vacated office at Beach Road to a recycling facility at Sungei Kadut Drive on Jan 30, 2023.

Instead, he discarded the waste from a lorry at a secluded spot along Kheam Hock Road, which is near Adam Road.

Siow was convicted of one charge under the Environmental Public Health Act. The case was concluded in court on Tuesday.

First-time offenders can be jailed for up to 12 months, fined up to S$50,000 or both. Repeat offenders may be jailed not less than one month and not more than 12 months, and fined up to S$100,000.

"The illegal disposal of waste is a serious offence as it pollutes the environment and can pose a hazard to public health," said NEA.

"NEA will not hesitate to take strict enforcement action against any person who disposes of waste illegally."

The agency added that since Jul 1 last year, it has been an offence to "cause or permit" the dumping of waste in a public place.

"This means NEA can take enforcement action against supervisors who instruct workers to dispose of the waste improperly."
