Work It Podcast: Forget poor performers, what about poor managers?

Bad bosses have always existed in workplaces but what is their impact and what can workers do?

After our episode on dealing with poor performers, Work It listeners wrote in to ask us to discuss managers who were not doing their jobs well.

From micromanagers to non-managers, how do you deal with people responsible for your renumeration and growth? Leadership coach and founder of Designing Trust Audrey Low is our guest.

Communicating your challenges with your manager is important, says leadership coach Audrey Low. (Photo: CNA)
It's really important to take a responsible mindset rather than a victim mindset. Because if we (just say) I have a bad boss, this person is like this, like that, we would just be drinking poison.
Speaking to someone who is a peer to your supervisor in confidence to ask what's the working style of that person, how can (you) learn to better manage them (can help).

Jump to these key moments:

  • 3:51 Who is a bad boss?
  • 10:43 How to deal with micromanagers
  • 16:58 What about managers who are not in the trenches
  • 24:21 Going to someone you trust or to HR
